Bill Balaskas
He was born in Greece, where he obtained a BSc in Economics and Business Administration. However, his love for cinema led him to the creation of his first short film, in 2004. In 2005, he moved to the United Kingdom in order to study Video Arts Production in University College for the Creative Arts. He has produced several short films and gallery-based installations which have participated in more than 20 international film festivals and exhibitions around the world. He is an awarded writer (British Council of Greece Short Story Awards 2005) and screenwriter (Houston International Film Festival Gold Remi Award 2006). In February 2008 he was invited by EMERGEANDSEE Berlin to be a festival jury member. Also, he curated and presented a program of experimental films and videos in the National Film Theatre in London, for EOS.
billbalaskas [at] yahoo.grHis work is visually diverse, as it incorporates different themes and presentation formats (single screen projections, video installations, multi-screen installations, combination of film and digital video). Nevertheless, conceptually the work follows a much more “coherent” trajectory. The main ideas that occupy his projects are those of fragmentation (both literarily and metaphorically) and irony. Those are located in a context of highly structured “narrative” mechanisms, which always use the form in order to inform the content.
