Julia Pannell

Born in Sydney, Australia, Julia Pannell moved to England to complete a BA in Photography & Media Arts after living and working for 5 years as a freelance photographer in Switzerland. Initially coming to photography from a commercial direction, her current artistic practice centers around themes of the sublime and the expansiveness of scapes; cloudscapes, landscapes and oceanscapes.

She is interested in space transformation through the use of photographs and exploring the interplay between light and colour, in both the image itself and the presentation of the work, using analogue and digital processes. Her most recent work titled ‘Between’ was a photographic installation consisting of a cloudscape dyptich on one wall and on the facing wall, a photograph of the outside of a plane’s windows, with the viewer placed in the centre of these images. The work questioned themes of time zones, incalculable time and the “present”. Her current work in progress is also concerned with space – landscape space, and through this project she is exploring a place of barren, empty and quietly strange topography reminiscent of her homeland.
